Christmas Reading Holders

How it works: Lower the upright toilet roll into the empty basket and put the removable hat on top. The upper part of the white roll stays visible between basket and hat. Lift off the hat to take out or replace the roll; the basket, limbs and open book stay together.
Shared base and roll fits: All three collections use the same basket, limbs and book construction. The Main basket is about 13.2 cm across with a 6.0 cm wall at gauge. Choose Small for a roll 9.6-10.3 cm across, Main for over 10.3 cm through 11 cm, or Large for over 11 cm through 11.7 cm. The fits are for rolls 10-11 cm tall. Measure your roll and check the openings as you work; yarn, stuffing and seams affect the finished size.
Materials: Bulky (weight 5) yarn with a 6 mm hook for the basket and hat; worsted (weight 4) yarn with a 3.5 mm hook for the limbs, book and most details. Each collection includes its character colour plans and full materials list. You will also need polyester fibrefill, a tapestry needle, scissors, pins, removable stitch markers, measuring tape, a spare toilet roll and optional ivory felt for the book pages. All pieces are soft and wire-free.
Skill: Intermediate. Spiral single crochet, waistcoat stitch, turned rows, increases, decreases, back-loop turns, colour changes, simple embroidery and sewing.
