Make four Scandinavian-style Christmas gnomes for a mantel, shelf or tiered tray. Each has a long cone hat, a loopy white beard, a round pink nose and a flat weighted base.

Four characters to crochet

  • Classic: a red hat and grey body with a white beard and pink nose.
  • Nordic: a cream hat with a counted red-and-white Fair Isle-look band and a red body.
  • Woodland: a forest-green hat with a small counted mushroom applique and a brown body.
  • Sweet: a red-and-white candy-cane spiral hat, a pink body and a flat peppermint on the brim.

Size and materials

At gauge, each gnome is about 25.4 cm tall with the hat upright. The base is about 9.5 cm across, the body 12.7 cm high, the hat 14.6 cm long and the beard 10.8 cm long. Yarn, tension, stuffing and a bent tip change the finished size.

Intermediate. Use worsted cotton or cotton-acrylic with a 3.5 mm hook, polyester fibrefill, a smooth plastic-canvas or cardboard base insert, and 100 g poly pellets in a securely sealed fabric pouch per gnome. Yarn buying allowances: Classic 218 m / 238 yd; Nordic 233 m / 255 yd; Woodland 228 m / 249 yd; Sweet 228 m / 249 yd. An enclosed pipe cleaner is optional for a gently bendable tip.

These weighted gnomes are decoration, not a toy. Keep pellets and all small parts away from small children and pets. Display indoors with the whole base supported. Spot clean only and keep the weighted base dry.
