Four crochet spirals that twist as they hang: a broad burgundy ribbon with a quiet cream rim, a navy band finished in cream shell fans, a gold ribbon with an open ladder beside its ivory edge, and two narrow ribbons — green and terracotta — sharing one hanger and one tassel. Each is worked flat in turned rows. The outer edge grows faster than the foundation, and that difference is what makes the band curl into a spiral on its own. No wire, no stuffing, no centre cord and no metal hardware.

Pattern details

This download includes all 4 patterns shown in one PDF.

What you get

  • 4 written patterns in one 19-page PDF
  • Written in US crochet terms, intermediate
  • A stitch count at the end of every row — calculated from the pattern by script, never typed in by hand, so no row can contradict the one before it
  • Stitch-destination diagrams for the shell, lace and increase rows, plus connection maps showing exactly where the hanging loop and tassel attach
  • An abbreviations table giving the UK equivalent of every stitch, and technique notes — our dc is a UK treble, so read it first if you crochet in UK terms
  • Instant download — the file is yours the moment you check out

Patterns in this file

  • Rose Ribbon Spiral — a broad, solid ribbon with a quiet cream rim
  • Ocean Scallop Spiral — a solid blue spiral finished with separate cream shell fans
  • Golden Lace Spiral — a warm gold ribbon with a continuous open ladder beside its ivory rim
  • Woodland Twin Spiral — two narrow ribbons, green and terracotta, sharing one hanger and one tassel

Size

About 48 cm along the foundation row before curling. That is the length you work, not the finished hanging drop — the band draws up as it coils, and how far depends on your yarn and tension.

You will need

  • DK / light worsted (#3) cotton from one yarn range, in four colours
  • 4 mm hook
  • removable stitch markers
  • tapestry needle
  • optional smooth wooden beads

Pure stitch engineering — zero blocking or wire needed!

Most crocheted ornaments require messy fabric stiffener sprays or wire frames to keep their shape, but this designer uses clever stitch geometry and natural tension to create self-supporting 3D spirals. Standard US terminology, instant PDF download, and zero confusing typos. A flawless 5-star pattern!

We love that you appreciated the zero-blocking design Jessica! Happy holiday crafting!

Finished all 4 styles over a single weekend

Such an addictive and satisfying project! Each sculpted ornament took me only about 45 minutes to finish. Getting 4 distinct sculpted variations in one download is exceptional value. I added wooden beads at the top and a gold tassel at the bottom as suggested in the styling tips. These will be my go-to holiday gifts this year!

Looks like expensive hand-carved wood on the tree!

The dimensional sculpted ridges on these four spiral ornaments are breathtaking! Working into the post and back loops creates deep, architectural ridges that catch the Christmas tree fairy lights so elegantly. Everyone who saw them thought they were carved wood or boutique ceramic. High-resolution photos and crystal clear instructions throughout.

Thank you so much Sarah! The way the sculpted ridges play with holiday fairy lights is truly our favorite part!

Fiddly start, but well worth the patience

I was really annoyed on my first try with design #2 because my stitch counts kept coming up short and the spiral was twisting backwards. I nearly left a 1-star review out of sheer frustration. After counting stitches rigorously with markers and following the close-up photos for hook placement, the piece finally blossomed into a stunning sculpted spiral. Definitely requires patience for beginners, but the final heirloom quality is undeniable.

We appreciate your honest feedback Karen! Stitch markers are definitely a lifesaver on these sculpted rounds. Thank you for your patience and for creating such a lovely piece!

Almost threw it in the trash, but now it's my favorite!

When I first started, the sculpted post stitches felt so tight and confusing that my spiral curled into an awkward, wrinkled lump. I was genuinely frustrated and felt I had wasted my money on an overcomplicated pattern. But after setting it aside overnight, re-reading the photo tutorial carefully, and consciously relaxing my tension, the 3D sculpted ridges locked into place beautifully. It holds its shape perfectly without any wire or starch. So glad I pushed through!

Thank you for sticking with it Brenda! Sculpted ridges do feel tight during the first few rounds, but that exact tension creates that crisp 3D structure without any stiffener. So glad it turned out amazing!
