Designs: Autumn pairs rust and terracotta hats with cream beards, a rounded copper-gold oak leaf and four honey-tan acorns on an ecru base. Christmas has red hats with white bands, white beards, a deep-red poinsettia and four green holly sprigs with red berries on white lace. Winter alternates ice-blue and navy hats around one large silver-white snowflake and four small ice-blue snowflakes, with white beards and a white base. Spring combines pastel pink, lilac and sage hats with cream beards, a rounded five-petal lilac flower and four pink tulips on cream lace.

Materials: Light fingering / 4-ply cotton or size 3 crochet thread with a 2.5 mm hook. Match gauge in both directions. Add a tapestry needle, scissors, removable markers, measuring tape, rustproof pins, a blocking mat, starch-free water spray and a little soft filling for the noses. Approximate allowances are listed by colour for each doily.

Skill: Confident beginner to intermediate. Techniques include joined rounds, turned rows, increases, decreases, stitches worked into chain loops, short two-hdc bobbles, small picots, simple embroidery and sewing appliques flat.

Size at gauge: Every doily is about 33.3 cm across the picot tips, within 32-36 cm. Each hat is about 8.3 cm long and 5.6 cm wide; each beard about 5.4 cm long and 5.6 cm wide. Each padded-flat nose is about 1.1 cm across. After the 1.5 cm hat-and-beard overlap, each gnome is about 12.3 cm long. Over 10 cm, sc gauge is 36 stitches by 36 rows, dc gauge is 36 stitches by 14 rows, relaxed chain gauge is 40 chains, and mesh radial rise is 14 rounds. Yarn, sewing and blocking affect the final measurements.
